Things to do in San Antonio de Areco
San Antonio de Areco sits roughly 110 km west of Buenos Aires, a two-hour drive or bus ride each way, and the round trip is the point to plan around: this is a full day out, not a half-day add-on. The town is the country's reference point for gaucho craft, with working silversmiths and leather workshops around the historic centre and old pulperías still serving as bars.
Its museum dedicated to gaucho and Güiraldes heritage typically charges a small entry fee, a few euros, and closes on Mondays. The Fiesta de la Tradición, the town's biggest gaucho festival, runs in November.
This page covers the town itself and its silverwork, leather and pulpería tradition, separately from the asado-and-horses estancia day trips that can be based here or elsewhere in the pampas.
