La Plata ist eine eigenständige Stadt und keineswegs ein anderer Name für den Río de la Plata, den Fluss, an dem die Hauptstadt liegt – die Verwechslung kommt häufig genug vor, um sie klarzustellen. Es ist die Provinzhauptstadt von Buenos Aires, etwa 60 km südöstlich des Stadtzentrums, in etwa 1 bis 1,5 Stunden mit dem Auto oder dem Zug ab Constitución erreichbar.
Die Stadt wurde in den 1880er-Jahren von Grund auf angelegt, auf einem strengen Raster, durchzogen von diagonalen Alleen – ein Plan, der sich zu Fuß rund um die Plaza Moreno am besten erschließt. Ihr Wahrzeichen ist eine neugotische Kathedrale mit über 100 Meter hohen Zwillingstürmen, kostenlos zugänglich, wobei der Zugang zu Türmen und Krypta gebührenpflichtig ist (wenige Euro).
Ein halber Tag deckt das Zentrum ab; mit dem Naturkundemuseum wird daraus ein ganzer Tag.
